Volunteer in Bali, Indonesia
The Program
Indonesia is one of most interesting country in the world. Indonesia has around 300 ethnic groups, each with cultural identities developed over centuries and influenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and European sources. Bali is an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country's 33 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island. Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, and performing arts. Balinese percussion orchestra music, known as gamelan, is highly developed and varied.
The program is based in Ubud. Ubud is a town in central Bali and is regarded as the cultural Centrex of Bali. It is famous as an arts and crafts hub, and much of the town and nearby villages seems to consist of artists' workshops and galleries. There are some remarkable architectural and other sights to be found, and a general feeling of well being to be enjoyed, all thanks to the spirit, surroundings, and climate of the place.
You can join the program from a minimum 2 weeks up to 8 weeks. You need to arrive on the Sunday before the start date of the program at Denpasar Airport. The first week of your program is the Bali Introduction Week, this will ensure that you get the most out of your stay by learning about the Balinese culture and customs.
Bali Introduction Week
This week you will learn about the Balinese culture and traditions, have a cooking class, learn Balinese basic language and get to know the Balinese life style. This is the itinerary :
Bali Volunteer Teaching
From the second week you will start your volunteer teaching work. All the schools an children projects where you will be teaching are in and around Ubud. The children are on average 4 to 12 years old . They are very friendly and very keen to learn from the volunteers. Participants should have a good level of English and some knowledge and prior experience in teaching is appreciated, but not necessary. You have to love children, as you will be surrounded with lots of them everyday!
Education is probably the most important tool in development of children's education in Asia and it will help them a lot in getting a good job later in life. Volunteers teach English to the local children at school and children projects. Whether you are a qualified teacher or simply interested in helping kids abroad, we have volunteer teaching opportunities at local schools. The teaching time is about 4 to 6 hours per day.
Teaching English is the main volunteering task, but also other subjects such as :
• Arts and crafts or sports like football, hockey, cricket and athletics
• Motivating the children to learn
• Instilling social, psychological and physical security to the children
• Interactions with the children
• Assist local Teachers and make lesson plans
• Create social awareness among the kids especially concerning the environment, kindness etc.
• Teach kids to sing and dance

The coordinator of the volunteer program in Bali is Chanjira

The coordinator provided excellent information including information about the local culture and people. She also gave me lots of information about surrounding places and good places to visit. My coordinator is extremely helpful and has gone above and beyond. In my introduction week I have been immersed into the culture of Bali. The food and accommodation is brilliant. The food has been freshly prepared by local people and is always delicious.
