Volunteer Projects in Beijing, China

Orphanage

This orphanage provides temporary foster care for orphans from different welfare homes in China. All these children have special medical conditions but have gone through correction surgeries or are waiting surgeries. At present, there are 11 children from 3 months to 6 years old.

Volunteers need more energy and patient to take care of the children. The volunteers can play with children, cooking for them, sing songs or tell stories to the children.

Charity for the Disabled

This charity is a local, unique, community-based charity serving the mentally disabled. It is truly a community based organizing, breaking away from traditional institutional care. The vision is equal opportunity for the mentally disabled to aid in their contribution to the community and share in the benefits with the community.

Activities are aimed at facilitating trainees’ independence within the local community and improving their life skills. Daily activities include arts and crafts, music class, athletics, and life skills. Weekly field trips are taken to nearby libraries, youth centers, elderly centers, sports grounds, and local markets to both connect them with the community and enhance their independent living skills.

Volunteers will be teaching English and help in activities at the charity such as handicraft, making postcards for fundraising and helping in the welcome program for visitors.

School for Poor Children

This is a primary school for children of poor families from other provinces in China who are working in Beijing. The school is a not-profit and not-government school that receive no financial support from the government. Therefore the school's facilities are very basic. Many immigrants parents can't afford expensive tuition fee for their children at the government school. The school runs on very limited resources so they need a lot of help. Our volunteer have done a great job at this school giving the students English education which is very much needed as the school has no financial means to employ good English teachers.

Volunteers will have three lesson for different groups in the morning from 9 to 11:30. Then in the afternoon, volunteers can prepare the lessons for tomorrow or have some free time to explore Beijing if they want. You can also give afternoon classes if you want.

There are around 30-40 students in each class. Between the break, volunteer stay in the office room to relax and and have some tea. On the first day volunteer will join one of the classes and introduce themselves to the class. They can watch the class and learn more about the students and their English level and ability.

Children's Project for Children of Convicts

This project in Beijing is currently the home of 130 children ages from 1 to 20 years old. As a non-governmental charitable organization, this project has been dedicated to providing foster care and education for the children of convicts for over ten years. The project is committed to bring these minors together in a stable and warm family. This environment enables them to grow-up both happily and healthily, just as other children would. The charitable services include tailored educational programs, psychological counseling, rights protection and vocational training.

As the children are neither orphans nor physically disabled, they are ineligible for government subsidies. At the same time they can receive unfavorable treatment in society due to their family background. On their own, the children would be left without shelter : some would beg for money and food, and many would be abandoned and possibly abused by their relatives.

My volunteering program in China with WLS International was great and I learned a lot. My coordinator Melissa was excellent. She was very helpful all the time. She also introduced me to other WLS volunteers with whom I had a great time. I enjoyed the program and I would do it again!

volunteer testimonial

I would rate the support of my coordinator as a 10 out of 10. She was professional, reliable and friendly and, with her support, I quickly acclimated to my new surroundings. By traveling to China as a volunteer, I was able to meet people and experience the culture in a way that I otherwise would not have. The personal and professional connections with the staff, program participants and children impacted my life in such a positive way, it’s difficult to convey. I would recommend this program to anyone wanting a meaningful and exciting opportunity to change the way you experience your own life.

This is an excellent way of visiting somewhere totally different that doesn't cost as much as a tour group and it really does add meaning to a person's version by working with people that are less fortunate. Lifelong friends made, money well spend.
